ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#Major depressive disorder (MDD) accompanied by anxious distress is a chronic and disabling disorder. Its conventional drug therapies often have low patient compliance due to drug-related side effects. In Persian medicine, lavender-dodder syrup is one formula often recommended for such disorders.@*OBJECTIVE@#This study compares the effects of lavender-dodder syrup to the standard drug, citalopram, for treating MDD with anxious distress.@*DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION@#This six-week, double-blind, randomized, clinical trial was carried out in a psychiatric outpatient clinic. During the six-week intervention period, patients in citalopram group received citalopram tablets 20 mg/d plus 5 mL placebo syrup every 12 h; patients in group B received placebo tablets once daily plus 5 mL of lavender-dodder herbal syrup every 12 h.@*MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES@#Primary outcome measures, depression and anxiety, were evaluated using the Hamilton Depression/Anxiety Rating Scales, and were scored at the beginning of the study and at weeks three and six. Secondary outcome measures including response to treatment and remission rates were also compared between the two groups.@*RESULTS@#Fifty-six participants with MDD and anxious distress were randomly assigned to two groups. Mean depression scores significantly decreased in citalopram and herbal groups at weeks three and six (time effect: P < 0.001), although the observed changes were not significantly different between the groups (intervention effect: P = 0.61). Mean anxiety scores were not significantly different between the two groups at week three (P = 0.75). However, at the end of week six, the observed decrease was significantly higher in the herbal syrup group than the citalopram group (intervention effect: P = 0.007).@*CONCLUSION@#The herbal syrup is an effective and tolerable supplement for treating MDD with anxious distress.@*TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER@#IRCT2016102430459N1 on Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials.

ABSTRACT

Constipation is one of the most common complaints of children and a common cause of referrals to pediatricians. Numerous reasons for this disease have been mentioned in the Iranian traditional medicine (ITM). It is believed that this disorder is mostly due to the lack of consideration of the six essential principles (Setteh-ye-Zarurieah), which are necessary to maintain health and prevent disease. In this descriptive study we collected and classified the concepts related to the topic by reviewing reliable ITM text books. Scientific databases were also searched for the most commonly used herbs in the treatment of constipation. The results showed that, from the perspective of ITM, the first step in treating constipation in children is making lifestyle changes. This includes giving appropriate training in the six essential principles, and making modification in existing habits where necessary. In the next steps, using some herbal remedies for topical or oral administration is recommended. On the other hand, a few clinical trials have been done concerning the effects of herbal medicines on pediatric constipation. Therefore, ITM's preventive and curative strategies can provide an efficient and cost-effective way to address constipation in children. This study can serve as a preface to performing clinical studies in this field.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Peritoneal adhesions can be defined as abnormal fibrous bands between peritoneal or pelvic cavity. Flavonoid agents with antioxidant properties are present in Rosa damascene and seem to be useful for prevention of intra-abdominal adhesion formation. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the effect of R. damascena hydroalcoholic extract on prevention of adhesions

Material and Methods: In this experimental study, 30 rats were divided randomly into 3 groups group A received 1% extract, group B 5% extract and group C distilled water. During laparotomy, three longitudinal and transvers incisions each of 2 cm length were made in the serous surface by scalpel in the right and left sides of peritoneum, and a 2x2 cm patch was completely cut off. Group A and B received 1% and 5% hydroalcoholic extract of R. damascena [3 ml, intra-abdominal cavity] respectively and group C received distilled water during the surgery. Two weeks later in the second laparotomy, the adhesions were graded by means of Canbaz scale. Using SPSS v.16 software, data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test

Results: There were significant differences between the scores of groups A and C [P = 0.007]. The mean adhesion scores were 1.4 +/- 1.265 and 3 +/- 0.816 in groups A and C respectively

Conclusion: Results of this study demonstrated that use of R. damascena 1% extracts may result in effective prevention of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions. After more studies in the future, R. damascena or its derivatives may prove to be useful for prevention of adhesions

ABSTRACT

Statement of the Problem: With the recent focus of researches on the development of non-invasive treatment modalities, the non-invasive treatment of early carious lesions by remineralization would bring a major advance in the clinical management of these dental defects. Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate [CPP-ACP] is considered to be effective in tooth remineralization

Purpose: The aim of this in-vitro study was to compare the effects of whey and CPP-ACP in increasing the enamel microhardness

Materials and Method: Microhardness of 30 sound human permanent premolars was measured before and after 8-minute immersion of samples in Coca-Cola. The teeth were then randomly divided into 3 groups and were immersed in artificial saliva, whey, and tooth mousse for 10 minutes. The changes of microhardness within each group and among the groups were recorded and analyzed using paired t-test

Results: The microhardness increased in each group and between the groups; this increase was statistically significant [p= 0.009]

Conclusion: The effect of whey on increasing the enamel microhardness was more than that of tooth mousse

ABSTRACT

Currently, laparoscopic cystectomy is the first-line therapy for ovarian benign cysts that are resistant to current therapies. There are different studies that point to ovarian reserve damage due to laparoscopic cystectomy. In this study, we evaluate the ovarian damage following laparoscopic cystectomy for non-endometriosis cysts using ultrasound and pathology findings. This is a prospective cohort study conducted between 7rd month of 2011 and 10th month of 2012 in Women hospital affiliated to Tehran university of medical sciences.45 non-endometriosis cysts [17 teratoma,7 mucinous, 10 simple serous and 11 simple cysts] underwent laparoscopic cystectomy with stripping technique. Amount of excised parenchyma, number of lost oocytes and cyst wall fibrosis thickness were histopathologically studied. Before and 3 months after surgery antral follicle count was evaluated by ultrasound. AFC after cystectomy for teratoma and simple serous was significantly reduced P<0.05. By larger teratomas and more parenchyma inadvertently removed during their excision [1.64, 0.255] reduced AFC was seen and in simple serous cysts with more removed parenchyma amount [1.5] reduced AFC occurred. In our study simple cysts excision led to a loss in AFC that was not associated with any other cyst parameters. Mucinous cysts resection led to no specific ovarian reserve damage. Laparoscopic cystectomy for non-endometriosis leads to reduced ovarian reserve

ABSTRACT

Mitochondria play key roles in many cell functions including energy production, fatty acid metabolism, pyrimidine biosynthesis, calcium homeostasis, and aging. They also regulate crucial signaling cascades such as apoptosis and oxidative stress. The proteome is often used to investigate the functional correlations on protein levels. Based upon the human, genome there is estimated 2000 to 2500 associated mitochondrial proteins, however, just over 600-800 have been identified at the protein level. For this reason, mitochondria contain a great number of proteins that have yet to be identified and characterized. The identification of these proteins can help in discovery of biological process. This protocol focuses on step-by-step procedure of mitochondrial proteome extraction from peripheral blood mononuclear cell [PBMC] mitochondria. The isolation and preparation procedures described here require 6 hours approximately

ABSTRACT

To report a case of bilateral primary intraocular lymphoma. A 33-year-old man presented with bilateral blurred vision since two years ago. Examination revealed large keratic precipitates, anterior chamber reaction, posterior subcapsular cataracts, and vitreous infiltration. After a short trial of topical and periocular steroids, diagnostic 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy was performed and cytologic evaluation of the aspirate confirmed a diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma. The patient was subsequently managed with intravitreal methotrexate in both eyes and responded favorably. Central nervous system workup for lymphoma was negative. Primary intraocular lymphoma should be considered in young adults suffering from chronic recalcitrant panuveitis

ABSTRACT

Aromatherapy, as an alternative medicine, is using of volatile oils for inducing psychological and physical well- being. In this study, the effects of inhalation aromatherapy in reducing anxiety and depression in female students of dormitory of Tehran University of Medical Sciences were investigated in 2008-2009. In this experimental study, 260 female students living in dormitory were selected and assigned randomly in 4 groups of 65 people as case and control according to two variables of anxiety and depression. The scales used in this study were Spillberger Anxiety Test and Beck Depression Inventory. At first, pre-test were taken. A mixture of essential oils of Lavender and Rose was inhaled for four weeks, half an hour for each night by the case groups [anxious and depressed]. For control group, only sesame oil inhalation was used. At the end of the second week, post-test 1 and at the end of fourth week, post-test 2 were taken. Students who received inhalation aromatherapy had significant improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms compared with pre-test and control group [p
